Due to the bomb cyclone, this winter feels more bizarre than last year. The storm shut down the east coast. But the extreme winter won't stop human beings going out to have fun and enjoy the life. After skiing or staying outside for a while, you realize that you get frostbite. And you have a date or an important occasion later. While you are hesitating of wearing makeup, no one can tell you what to do but the dermatologist. So, here Dr. Angus has some advice for you. After the home treatment, you can definitely wear makeup after the skin recovers.

How to tell the level of your frostbite?

Frostbite is like burned skin, having different stages that come with different symptoms. You can tell from your symptoms to know how bad your skin is “bitten” by the cold.

The graphic from Mayo Clinic Web ( ) shows different stages of frostbite.

Since Superficial and Deep frostbite are two stages require the physician diagnose and medical treatments, we won't discuss here. Here we only talk about Frostnip.

The typical symptoms of this stage are redness, feeling cold, skin prickling and numbness. It often happens to fingers, toes, nose, ears, cheeks and chin.

How to deal with the symptoms of light frostbite, Frostnip?

The first step, of course, is to warm up yourself. Don’t rub while it turns itching due to the dryness. At the time, the skin is irritated. To calm the skin is the major remedy. It is like the skin gets burned by sun. Therefore, what can you use to ameliorate this red and irritated skin? Here are some suggestions that we review the ingredients and consider as good remedies for this issue:

  1. Vaseline Original Petroleum Jelly

As a plastic surgeon, I often suggest my patience to use it after laser as the daily moisturizer.

I choose it as the first option because of some reasons:

  • 100% pure, no any other ingredients.
  • Won't penetrate in skin due to the particle size. So, it is safe.
  • Stay on atop of the skin to protect skin and lock the water below the skin.

After browsing over 20 products, I finally find this product that has simple formula with limited preservative that are derived from plants. It doesn’t have thicker, surfactants, or fragrance. If you check other Aloe Vera, you must be aware of the ingredients because some products put the Vera Aloe as the minor ingredients while the products are most of thicker and surfactants, like carbomer and caprylyl glycol. What you want to get is Aloe Vera, not those thicker or surfactants, right?

  1. IceBerq Sheet Mask

We designed this mask for sun burn skin. Frostbite is similar skin damage as sun burn. So, you can apply this mask to hydrate and calm the irritated skin. The function ingredients:

  • Burned skin use texture: the micro plant grown mask texture is very affinity to human skin to decrease the allergy possibility. Meanwhile it refreshes and calm the irritating feeling.
  • Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice and Avena sativa (Oat) Kernel Extract: to sooth the irritated skin.
  • D-Panthenol and Ectoin: to help the skin repair and calm the irritated skin.
  • Organic Glycosyl Trehalose, Hydrolyzed Sodium Hyaluronate, and Allantoin: to increase the water content, hydrating the skin.

Unavoidably, this product needs to have limited preservative and emulsifiers because it has many major ingredients binding together. Fortunately, we have our founder, Amanda, to select, to formulate and to oversee the producing. So, we assure that the emulsifier and surfactants won't penetrate in the skin and harmless. Sometimes, we need to trade off the effectiveness and the safe chemicals selection.

Hope this helps. Happy New Year!
